Here’s some stats that may interest some from an over 50s tournament i refereed at yesterday. I was one of 4 referees in action and I have match cards from 11 games I refereed. Each game was 12 minutes in duration. According to my records during the 11 games I penalised players for not walking 56 times which averages out at 5 per game. The most in any one game was 9 and the least was 2. No players received a blue card for 3 non walking offences in any one game. 14 players however were substituted after receiving two warnings for not walking. There were lots of excellent teams playing yesterday and 98% of players competed well in a sporting manner, not agreeing with all decisions given but accepting of them. The other 2% did not and challenged decisions throughout and created an atmosphere in some games that was unnecessary. I know trials are being used for team offences and yesterday if 4 team (non walking) offences resulted in the award of a penalty then 6 would have been awarded according to the records I kept. The duration of the sin bin used yesterday was only 2 minutes and although they were only short games , in my opinion that was far too short a sanction and easily managed by the offending teams and therefore not really a suitable sanction at all. Four minutes would have been far more suitable.
