What were your first steps into Youth Leadership?

Hi everyone! I've recently been reflecting on my involvement in Youth Leadership and my first steps into the space and curious on other people's stories.

Personally, my first look into Leadership was the BUCS & FA Women's Leadership Programme 22/23 because of one of my lecturers at University encouraging me to take part in it - through this I was encouraged to apply for and lucky enough to attend the FA Leadership Academy 2023 which has since led me to many exciting opportunities within Youth Leadership.

I was wondering what were your first steps into Youth Leadership? And where did you hear about these opportunities?

  • My first step was when my County FA hosted a Young Leaders conference, which I found out about from my Referee Development Officer. I attended this, and joined the County Youth Network from there. They encouraged me to apply to The FA Leadership Academy, and that opened so many doors for me, which led to even more opportunities, and so on.

  • My first look into Leadership was when I began organising fixtures and coaching my local Special Olympics Team across a variety of sports, I originally heard about this opportunity from my school. This opportunity at Special Olympics inspired me to become the Vice Chair of my University football club where I had the opportunity to attend the BUCS Club Committee Leaders day and learned about all of the programmes offered by the FA. Through these experiences I was also encouraged to apply for the FA Leadership Academy 2023 which has been a pivotal programme in my personal and personal leadership journey to date.
