Pride Month and Football: Celebrating pride on and off the pitch

My name is Katana Gould, I am currently the Regional Youth Network Lead on The FA National Youth Council. I have also recently completed my first year at the University of Central Lancashire studying Sports Business Management.

In the footballing world, Pride Month is very important for raising awareness and aiding inclusivity on and off the pitch. Many teams host events, participate in parades, and take part in initiatives, such as the rainbow laces campaign. Having high profile teams share their experiences and show their support is extremely important to ensure that players and supporters around the world know they are supported and seen.

As mentioned above, the Rainbow Laces campaign is one of the most widely recognised initiatives within Pride Month and football. This campaign is led by the LGBTQ+ rights organisation, Stonewall. Every year, players, fans, staff, and parents, etc. replaces their regular laces with rainbow laces to show their support. It is very simple but very powerful. Rainbow laces were my first sight into pride within football.

While playing and volunteering in football I have definitely seen my share of challenges people that part of the LGBTQ+ community have and are still facing. Through my own experience I have seen first-hand how important it is to see representation throughout the system. Visually being able to see allies and individuals that are part of the community creates a safe space full of validation and belonging. It is important to know that football is a place for EVERYONE. Creating this space can be shown through many ways such as, the rainbow lace campaign, supporting charities, or simply being the change you want to see through conversations and actions.

Football has been such a massive part of my life for over 10 years. I have never felt so welcome and at home within a space. I feel so extremely lucky that I have had such a positive experience and a safe space to thrive on and off the pitch. Whether it was playing grassroots football, playing and studying in America, or fulfilling my role in volunteering.

Pride should always be represented and celebrated within football, but Pride Month is a great reminder to reflect and see the role that we all play in creating a space where EVERYONE has the opportunity and support thrive.
