As I entered the final year of my Sports Management degree at University Academy 92, I found myself at a crossroads, uncertain about the direction I wanted to take after graduation. My passion for sports, particularly cricket and football, had always been a significant driving force in my life. However, as I approached my final year, I realised I needed more hands-on experience to translate that passion into a clear career path. The answer came in the form of an internship opportunity with Manchester FA—an experience that would shape my professional future in ways I hadn’t anticipated.
When Manchester FA advertised several internship opportunities, I knew this could be the break I was looking for. Among the roles available, the Women and Girls Football Development internship and the Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) internship caught my attention. After some consideration, I decided to apply for both. What followed was a series of conversations that eventually led to my acceptance into the program. I was thrilled to have the chance to work under the guidance of Nicole Flynn, who would mentor and support me throughout my time at Manchester FA.
From the outset, the internship was a deeply enriching experience that exposed me to various aspects of football development. One of the first significant events I was involved in was a football tournament at the Ella Toone pitch in Wigan. This event was more than just a chance to watch football in action; it was an opportunity to witness first hand the impact of sport on the local community, especially in empowering young women and girls. Seeing their passion and determination on the pitch reinforced my belief in the importance of creating opportunities for diverse groups in sport.
Another highlight was attending 'Your Game,' an event hosted at Manchester City. The scale and professionalism of the event was impressive, and it provided a perfect setting to observe how sport can positively influence young people’s lives. I also had the privilege of being invited to networking events at Old Trafford, where I had the opportunity to engage with industry professionals, including coaches, club representatives, and fellow interns. These events were instrumental in expanding my professional network and gaining valuable insights into the various career paths within the sports industry.
In addition to these high-profile events, I also had the chance to build relationships with grassroots clubs like Ashton Pumas. Working with these clubs gave me a deeper appreciation for the tireless efforts of volunteers and local coaches who dedicate their time to nurturing young talent. It was inspiring to see the passion and commitment that drive grassroots football, further solidifying my desire to contribute to the development of the sport at all levels.
Throughout the internship, I was encouraged to engage in continuous professional development (CPD). I participated in various workshops and completed several FA coaching courses, which not only enhanced my skill set but also boosted my confidence in pursuing a career in sports. The knowledge and experience I gained during these sessions were invaluable and have undoubtedly prepared me for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
One of the most rewarding aspects of the internship was the people I met along the way. From Nicole Flynn, who provided unwavering support and guidance, to the numerous industry professionals and fellow interns I encountered, I was surrounded by a network of passionate and dedicated individuals. Many of these connections have endured beyond the internship, and I continue to stay in touch with them, sharing insights and opportunities—a true testament to the strength of the relationships I built during this time.
Reflecting on my time at Manchester FA, it’s clear that this internship was a turning point in my life. The experiences, skills, and relationships I developed during this period have been instrumental in shaping my career trajectory. Without this opportunity, I doubt I would have met half the incredible people I now count as mentors and friends.
Now, as I proudly serve as a Player Care Officer, I am filled with excitement and confidence, knowing that my time at Manchester FA has equipped me with the tools and connections I need to succeed in the sports industry. This internship was more than just a stepping stone; it was the foundation upon which I am building my career.
