My experience at Residential 1 of the FA and BUCS Women's Leadership Programme

Hi, I’m Maya and I feel incredibly fortunate to be able to share my experiences from the first residential session of the BUCS and FA Women’s Leadership Programme for 2024/25, being part of Cohort 6. The programme is all about empowering and inspiring young women in football by pushing us beyond our comfort zones with engaging tasks and workshops, notably networking with a group of diverse, likeminded individuals who all the share the same passion, women and girl’s football. In providing young girls with this support and guidance, together, we’re working towards a future where there’s no distinction between “women’s leaders” and leaders in general.

While I arrived with some nerves, they quickly transformed into excitement. I immediately felt at home, surrounded by people who not only supported one another but also brought so many unique strengths to the table. From the programme’s leaders to the accelerators and fellow participants, it was clear that everyone genuinely wanted the best for each other as we were immediately immersed into such a welcoming, warm atmosphere filled with shared stories and passions for advancing the game. Being in such an open, supportive environment was a privilege, and we engaged throughout the residential in both familiar and challenging tasks that nudged us out of our comfort zones.

This first residential was a real eye-opener—not only to the various career pathways in women’s football, thanks to conversations with industry professionals, but also to aspects of myself I hadn’t yet recognised. The programme has already helped me clarify my “why” and refine my goals within women’s football, whilst also encouraging me to approach self-reflection with kindness and patience. Initially, I wasn’t sure about the relevance of some workshops and found it hard to open up. However, looking back I see the impact: my confidence has grown, and I’m more willing to take risks in unfamiliar situations, all thanks to the techniques and support from everyone involved at the programme.

One of the most rewarding aspects from residential 1 was the connections we built in such a short time. I’ve never experienced such genuine, effortless networking, and I’m certain I’ve made friendships for life. Furthermore, the relationships we were able to form with the accelerators were especially strong and positive as we engaged in such meaningful, guiding conversations that have already helped me so much in my day-to-day life. This first residential exceeded all my expectations, and I can’t wait for the next two as I continue to grow and develop on this journey!
