Inspire Her Football Podcast: Empowering the Next Generation of Women in the Game

Hello everyone! I’m Freya Gudge - host of the brand-new Inspire Her Football Podcast. I'm currently the Community Engagement West Lead for the FANYC and proud to be part of the 2024 cohort of The FA Leadership Academy (FALA24).

When I joined FALA24 last July, we were challenged to create a project that could grow over the 12-month programme. From that moment, I knew I wanted to focus on something close to my heart: empowering more women to step into football and take on meaningful roles. That’s how the Inspire Her Football Podcast was born.

This podcast aims to spotlight inspiring women in the football world who are breaking boundaries and sharing their journeys. Through their stories, we want to show that there are so many ways to be involved in football—beyond just playing, coaching, or refereeing. Sometimes all it takes is one email, one conversation, one step.

For Episode 1, I had the pleasure of speaking with Sofia Gibbins - a fellow FALA24 participant. Sofia shared her unique journey into football and youth leadership, starting with a simple email to a local grassroots team. Now, she’s shining a light in the podcast of her story to empower the next generation of young girls who want to get involved.

Key takeaways from episode 1:

  • Go and volunteer - Don’t chase the money. Let your passion lead the way.
  • Be bold - Stand out. Don’t be afraid to be different.
  • Be happy - Enjoy what you do, and let that energy shine through.
  • Believe in yourself - Confidence is everything.

Football is more than just a game. There are still too many women who want to make an impact but don’t know where to begin. This podcast was created to shine a light on all the different roles in football - many of which are more accessible than people think.

Reflecting on Episode 1 and the journey so far, it’s not been an easy journey. I’ve changed my project idea twice before coming to this one. I’ve faced challenges - and I’ve had my cheerleaders too. Over the past 4-5 months, I’ve learned that it’s okay not to have the perfect idea right away. To those thinking about applying for FALA25, or who already have and are unsure where to start - trust the process. Your idea will grow, change, and evolve. That’s part of the journey. Most of all, have fun with it!

Let’s continue to inspire more women to find their place in football. One story at a time.
