How do you grow as a young leader when you feel inexperienced? Reflections from our third FA National Youth Council meeting

That is a question I reflected on during our third (FANYC) meeting of the season. it was one of the most personally impactful experiences for me so far.

One of the key moments was presenting my professional journey in football. I shared how my path began in Belgium, before moving to the UK and studying at university without a clear direction. At that time, I did not know exactly what I wanted to do within sports. It was only after taking time to understand myself that I realised football was my passion.

Within the space of a year, I participated in FALA and was selected to be part of the FA National Youth Council. Sharing my journey reminded me that leadership is not about having all the answers. It is about being willing to step forward.

Another highlight was the opportunity to speak with Mark Bullingham, Chief Executive Officer of The Football Association (FA). As someone who aspires to work in senior leadership positions in the future, I asked questions to better understand how decisions are made at that level. What stood out most was the openness to youth voice. It reinforced that young people are not just participants in the game we are contributors to its future.

We also spent time in breakout rooms reflecting on questions from the FA Providing Leadership Compass workbook. The “Developing the leader within me” section encouraged us to think about self-awareness, long term vision and areas for growth. That space for honest reflection helped me better understand both my strengths and where I need to improve.

Two lessons stood out for me:

  • Growth begins with self-awareness. You cannot lead others if you do not understand yourself.
  • Confidence develops through contribution. Speaking up, even when unsure, builds belief.

If you are a young person unsure about stepping into leadership spaces, my advice is simple: start before you feel ready. Development happens through action, reflection and support from others.

For me, this meeting reinforced that leadership is a journey, not a destination. And I am proud that my journey is only just beginning.
