Football, in many ways, has been my life’s cornerstone. After many years of playing and refereeing at Great Ayton FC, I found myself woven into the fabric of a community that rallied around the sport. The club was more than just a place to play; it became a pivotal part of our community's identity. Recognizing this inspired me to give back to the sport and the community that have given me so much.
As volunteers, our tasks are varied, ranging from the familiar paintbrush's on the clubhouse, goalposts, and containers to the hum of the lawn mower cutting the pitch. Our work extends from the aesthetic to the practical, with our most ambitious project being setting up irrigation systems to prevent waterlogged pitches, ensuring the game goes on no matter the weather.
Every brush , every blade of grass cut, and every pipe laid for irrigation contribute to a larger goal: enhancing the football experience for everyone in the community. It’s a tangible way of saying 'thank you' to a club that has offered us joy, friendships, and unforgettable memories.
Our grounds team is a group of individuals who, like me, have played for the club in different age groups. The club’s impact on our lives has motivated us all to contribute our time and effort. We are united by our shared experiences on the pitch and a common desire to give back to the community that fostered our love for the game.
This journey has not only allowed us to improve the physical conditions of our club but also strengthened our bond with the community. We recently had the honour of being named the "Grounds Team of the Year" for our county. But the real joy for us isn’t in the recognition; it’s the difference we have been able to make in the lives of all those who benefit from Great Ayton FC in the same way we have for so many years.
So, to all young people wondering how to contribute to their community, consider volunteering in football. You'll have the chance to learn new skills, meet passionate people, and make a meaningful impact. The journey may be challenging, but the rewards are immense.
From painting goalposts to preventing waterlogged pitches, volunteering in football is a testament to the idea that when we give back, we enrich not only our lives but also those of others in our community. Join us in making a difference, one volunteer project at a time.
