Hi, I'm Eleanor (Ellie) Smith, a Sport and Exercise Science student at Leeds Beckett University, currently on the BUCS Emerging Leaders Programme. Sport has always played a big part in my life and I’m dedicated to developing professionally alongside my academic and sporting commitments.
Recently, I had the opportunity to attend the BUCS Introduction Day at Manchester Cricket Club as part of the Emerging Club Leaders Programme, and it was an experience that set a really positive tone for what’s ahead.
From the outset, the day was packed with insight, practical learning, and discussion that genuinely challenged the way I think about leadership within university sport. Rather than just talking about leadership in theory, the sessions encouraged us to reflect on our own experiences, consider different perspectives, and think about how we can apply these ideas directly within our clubs. A huge credit goes to the BUCS team, particularly Sean Lofting and Dan Matthews, for creating such an open and engaging learning environment.
One of the standout moments for me was the session led by Benson James Miyoba. His focus on mindset, adaptability, and performing under pressure really resonated. The discussion around staying composed, thinking clearly, and being able to adjust quickly when circumstances change felt especially relevant, not just in sport, but in leadership and everyday decision-making. These are skills I know will be invaluable as I continue developing in my role.
Another highlight was meeting the other participants on the programme. Hearing about everyone’s different clubs, challenges, and ambitions added real depth to the day and reinforced how valuable shared experiences can be. It was great to connect with like-minded people who are equally motivated to push their clubs forward and make a positive impact.
Overall, the BUCS Introduction Day was a motivating and energising start to the programme. I’m really excited to continue with the rest of the Emerging Club Leaders Programme and to begin my placement as Operations Officer at York City Ladies. After the Introduction Day, I feel motivated and confident about what’s to come, particularly the opportunity to apply what I’m learning in a real club environment.
Working with York City Ladies is something I’m especially looking forward to. The role offers a great chance to develop my organisational, communication, and leadership skills while supporting the day-to-day operations of a growing and ambitious club. Being involved behind the scenes will allow me to better understand how effective operations contribute to both performance and player experience.
I’m excited to take on new challenges, learn from experienced staff, and play a small part in helping the club continue to move forward. This placement feels like a valuable step in my development within university and grassroots sport, and I’m keen to make the most of every opportunity the programme offers.
