What is the structure of your Walking Football sessions?

What does a typical session look like for your club? Do players show up just to play a game or do you incorporate coaching elements, such as refining skills, techniques and tactics?

  • Have to admit that the majority just want to turn up and play, so we don't incorporate any coaching. At our main session I do build in a proper warm-up session, but at our other two sessions (which I don't lead) there isn't any structured warm-up (which is frustrating for me!)

  • We require players to sign up beforehand, and players will be then allocated to teams a day before the sessions. There will be a short warm up before the session but then it is a general kick about, advise will be offered particularly to new players or when related to something the club is trying to do in completive fixtures.

We do run coached session in preparation for League games.

For women, again we require the women to sign up beforehand and teams are pre-set. There will be a warm up followed by a 10-15 minute coaching session. Maybe a skill focus, goalkeeping development, breaking the press etc. This is followed by a general social game with the coach giving both individual and tactical advise. We are trying to fit in a social session and some coaching within the 1-hour time allocation as the venue we use is very well used.

  • Our men’s/ mixed sessions are just turn up and play. The players have little or no interest in any coaching. Our ladies sessions always includes drills and coaching.

  • Thank you for your responses. For those who do include some coaching elements; where do you get ideas from? Would it be beneficial to create some resources to support this audience specifically i.e. Female Walking Football players/Beginner Walking Football Players? Or is there enough already out there to support?

  • Flo, I worked with our ladies group from day 1 and stayed with them throughout their first year. As can be expected from a group of more mature ladies their previous opportunities to play had been very limited in some cases so abilities ranged from absolute beginner to seasoned ladies footballers. There are lots of resources available from both the FA on line and others that are quickly adapted from running to walking, however perhaps some resources depicting adapted sessions would add value to the already available ones
