• Understand what to do in the event of a storm during a match.

Thunder and lightning can be a rare occurrence but when it occurs at a game we're refereeing, clubs, coaches and players expect us to know what process to follow and the actions to take.

• Check the forecast - be aware of any weather warnings issued and if a storm is forecast during your games, this will allow you to rehearse in your head the following process.
• Recognise the signs of an incoming storm - can you hear thunder in the distance? Can you see lightning? Has the sky clouded over?
• Speak with the home club if changing rooms are not available to confirm where is safe in the event the game needs to be suspended. Sheds, dugouts and open garage are not safe spaces. A car with a hard top would be more appropriate avoiding touching anything metal.
• Suspend the game - if you can hear thunder or see lightning the game should be suspended. 

How long should you suspend the game for?

Review the weather forecast, will the storm pass? Once you're comfortable the storm is passed the game can restart, you may need to allow time for the players to re-warm up following the suspension.
