In this article you will...
- Understand what to do in the event of a storm during a match.
Thunder and lightning can be a rare occurrence but when it occurs at a game we're refereeing, clubs, coaches and players expect us to know what process to follow and the actions to take.
- Check the forecast - be aware of any weather warnings issued and if a storm is forecast during your games, this will allow you to rehearse in your head the following process. If a thunderstorm is forecast, consider consulting the league and home club to confirm if the game should go ahead.
- Recognise the signs of an incoming thunderstorm - can you hear thunder in the distance? Can you see lightning? Has the sky clouded over? Be aware when you first hear thunder you could be in the area of the next flash zone.
- When you see lightening remember the 30-30 rule, when you see lightening start counting to 30, if you hear thunder before you reach 30 the game should be stopped immediately, as you're in potential danger.
- Speak with the home club if changing rooms or a clubhouse is not available to confirm where is safe in the event the game needs to be suspended. Sheds, dugouts and open garage are not safe spaces. A car with a hard top and the windows up would be more appropriate avoiding touching anything metal.
- If you find yourself in an exposed location it may be advisable to squat close to the ground, with hands on knees and with head tucked between them. Try to touch as little of the ground with your body as possible, do not lie down on the ground.
How long should you suspend the game for?
Play should not be restarted less than 30 minutes after the final clap of thunder, electrical charges can remain in the air and could still pose a risk.
- Review the weather forecast, will the storm pass? Once you're comfortable the storm has passed and you've observed the 30 minute rule the game can restart, you may need to allow time for the players to re-warm up following the suspension.
- Top tip - Ensure you check the field of play before restarting the game. Especially if there has been a large amount of rainfall.
