Practices to help defenders become comfortable passing to their goalkeeper ?

Hi,

I've coached grassroots for 8years and worked with a talented group of boys right through to U13 level. Recently i've switched to a coaching a mixed ability group at a new club and found when playing in defence several of the boys are uncomfortable passing back to our GK, instead just kicking the ball out for a corner. Ideally i'd prefer them to be braver and stay on the ball and work with a teammate to pass their way out of trouble but we are not at that level at present so for now i'd rather they used our goalkeeper as good option instead.

Has anyone come across any good exercises for building confidence in players to pass back to the goalkeeper when under pressure from attackers.

Thanks in advance,

Mike.

  • Hi Mike

for all players it about building confidence on the ball and knowing if a error is made they will not be criticized or substituted , i have always allowed them to make errors with no judgement but support and continue to encourage them at any level ,this is vitally important to their development , exposing them to difficulties and using the 3rs recreate the scenarios where their are facing challenges  over a period of sessions

also create a similar practices in different areas of the pitch with the same players ? differences

any player that has not had a ideal foundation regarding technical abilities and not yet quite pro efficient will struggle a little in this area and scenario.

if each player were technically proficient and confident then each individual link within that unit would be strong and able to link with other units within the team structure . i ghost lots of players in practices , paint them a picture to help them see clearer , but remember , they really need to be confident with the ball and to make their own decision for this to happen . what how and when -followed by a why
