Revisited Black History Month

Revisited: Black History Month

In this blog, Sarah Lowden, FA diversity and inclusion coach development officer, explains how FA Education helped support BAME coaches back in 2019.

October is an important month for us at The FA. It’s period of celebrating the positive contribution of members from the BAME community, and a time to show gratitude for the impact they’ve had on today’s society.

Last year, we kicked off Black History Month by hosting eight events across the country. From London to Liverpool, our aim was to provide support and guidance for BAME coaches working within the grassroots game.

The events welcomed the local coaching community in each location – and encouraged them to come and share their own experiences. We introduced coaches to their county FAs and highlighted the support available to BAME coaches at a local level (such as access to an FA coach mentor and other development opportunities).
The events also included several guest speakers, who shared their own personal stories, challenges and successes. One highlight was a truly insightful and honest Q&A session, which hit over 40,000 views on social media.

So, what did our attendees say?

“It was such a great night in Cheshire celebrating Black History Month with so many great speakers. I learnt a lot.”

“Another outstanding event, I really enjoyed it.”

“I have been truly inspired by the Black History Month event in Manchester and I have also had coach mentor support to help me (as a BAME coach) develop as a coach and person. I can’t thank The FA enough for these events and their continued support.”

We want to give BAME coaches the network and opportunities they need to excel and, most importantly, walk away from these events feeling inspired to continue their great work.
