Rules Query

Can anyone explain why the following statement is in Law 9 - Ball In and Out of Play:-

  • when playing indoors, it hits the ceiling

Surely all ceilings are above head height and therefore the ball becomes a dead ball long before it reaches the ceiling!

Seems like a totally superfluous statement.

  • Hi John,

This particular line was part of discussion in previous iterations of the Laws of the Game review and I think there was some caveat around if the ball came off the goalkeeper (whether classified as a save or not) which is why it remained in the Laws. This has never been challenged in previous reviews so assume that the frequency of instances has been so limited that it had not cropped up in conversations. However, you do make a great point in that line becoming irrelevant and this would be a good contender for the next LOTG Review process. I have detailed this in the Blog Post today.
