The game has some excellent referees assisting the development of walking football around the country but one of the most common complaints about competitive walking football is the inability of many referees to apply the laws of the game effectively. This needs to be addressed urgently. The FA Referees workshop is fit for purpose in preparing those who only intend to referee social and recreational sessions but the content needs to be adapted for those involved in league and tournament refereeing. The game needs to attract referees from a wider pool and a recognised qualification for walking football referees will help raise the profile of walking football amongst the refereeing fraternity. This qualification needs to positively raise the profile of the game but also highlight the different challenges that refereeing non contact walking football brings compared to refereeing the contact versions of the game such as regular football or futsal. As the games NGB the FA need to address this urgently as the WF community have been asking for such a qualification for as long as I can remember. I distinctly remember discussing the need with a senior FA referee manager and other senior members of the FA pre covid.
