Transition from parent to coach

Hi all,

Me and another dad have taken over the coaching of our kids under 8s due to the previous coaches and their kids leaving to another team for the next season. Although it's very new to us and a change for the kids (as well as new kids joining) it feels like there's still the feeling of us just being there to cover for the previous coaches. We've sat the kids down to explain the changes but there still seems to be a battle with them when it comes to listening and following instructions at times. We try to set up the sessions to be fun and engaging but you can see the kids itching to just start messing around almost instantly.

I understand they are just kids wanting to have fun but it's complete switch on their behaviour from last season.

Any advice on dealing with this transition would be very much appreciated!

  • I’m in a similar boat (except with U12 team). I do have the advantage of being a qualified Primary teacher. Perhaps the players need some signals that you’re in charge and there for the long term. I forked out for the coaches drill kit, so that I look the part and from that I’ve just tried to approach the sessions with confidence. Be energetic and try to attack the sessions with pace so that they get caught up. Don’t be afraid to do some quite different things. I brought in couple of different warm-up routines and it signalled a different approach. I have no really expertise and am just getting going myself but hope that helps!
