Under 6 mixed ability

Hi all, I have just completed training to become a coach for an under 6 side that my son plays for but the current numbers are too high so the kids need to be split into 2 teams. When talks first started I was under the impression that the teams would be split with mixed ability but now I’m being told it will be an “A” & “B” team which I wasn’t too happy about. Personally I think it would be better mixed ability but just after some thoughts on what is best for the kids?

  • Michael Parker, I am in the same situation in my club. 2 Teams due to high numbers, but 1 team is very much the 'A' team and the other (my team) is the 'B' team. Personally I'd prefer both teams to take on newcomers evenly throughout the season and to contain mixed ability players. It makes it difficult for us to develop our 'B' team as players are constantly joining through the season, and the 'best' players being cherry-picked by the 'A' team for the next. It does allow for bias towards the A team, which is picked up on by players, coaches and parents.
