U7s Struggling with Set Piece Rules

Hi,

I coach an U7s team, we've been together since July and most of them were in mini-kickers prior. The boys seem to really struggle to get to grips with rules for set pieces and restarting play, i.e. goal kicks/corners, throw-ins, when to kick-off, etc.

I've gone through the rules several times in several different training sessions and pre-match and half-time. I play match rules during small-sided games in the last 10-15 mins of training, but it doesn't seem to sink in.

I do have an issue with consistent attendance, but does anyone have any ideas/resources to help the players understand how they work? They're obviously still learning, but the game slows down massively due to the confusion they go through and we constantly lose possession because of it. And teams we've played haven't had the same issues to the same extent.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

  • In my squad the difference between players who ‘get it’ and those who don’t is whether they follow and watch any football outside of training. Perhaps the parents could be encouraged to watch some football with their children (doesn’t have to be a full match, just 10 mins of match of the day might help?)

I would also add that the referees should be helping the players to learn the game during matches. Perhaps a word with the ref before kick off to let them know that the players are still learning!?

  • I have asked the parents to encourage the kids to watch football, though they don't seem to be very co-operative. And I get the subs to watch the game and ask them what they would do, or how things are done in that situation.

The referees have been helping, they've been brilliant and very patient. It has been 2 months since I've posted this question and the kids have shown some improvement. But they're still getting a bit confused with what's happening when it comes to set pieces.

I will let refs know, though, in future.
