What should be my key coaching elements when introducing Futsal to my players for the first time?

What to deliver at first and how to better engage players that never had contact with Futsal.

  • I would start by getting them to learn the core ball mastery techniques, sole of the foot being the main one.

Get everyone into a circle and just practice manipulating the ball forwards, backwards and side to side with the sole of the foot.

Then get them to pair off, and space out, player 1 passes to their partner who meets the ball, stops the ball with their sole of the foot and then uses the sole of the foot to bring the ball back to their starting position (dragging the ball back), and then repeat.

  • Hi Robert,

I think teaching the rules of the game to the players would be beneficial too at the start of their futsal journey. As we know, the rules of the game in Futsal help to create an exciting and fast paced game. Everyone loves playing a match!

With regards to teaching players the above, I think it’s important we add the 'WHY' we use the sole in futsal. This method of control will help players to manipulate the ball in any direction, while keeping it close enough to avoid the opposition stealing the ball.
