Black History Month: looking back to move forward - discussion

Yesterday we hosted our first Black History Month webinar, which you can now view in this post or watch on our FA Learning YouTube channel, and we're looking for your answers to a particular question to carry on the discussion from the event!

158 people attended last night's event as two former England stars, Viv Anderson and Luther Blissett, were the guests for an evening full of insight and discussion.

Viv and Luther shared insight into their careers and the challenges they faced as pioneer black players within the game and there was a chance for the audience to ask questions about their incredible careers, from their early days as players through to their final days as a coach.

We're looking to carry on the engaging discussion that took place and wondered what our coaching community thought to this conversation starter:

What behaviours and actions should we expect to see from coaches who truly embrace diversity and inclusion with their teams and clubs?

Let us know what you think to our conversation starter by replying below!

As well as a range of Black History Month content, stories and discussions across our platforms, we also have three more keynote webinars with special guest speakers that you can get involved in.

Each webinar with be hosted by our coach inclusion and diversity manager, Butch Fazal, and will feature a Q&A and information about some new initiatives to support the black and Asian coaching community.

These are free and will provide coaches with CPD hours.

  • For anyone viewing on the coaching community homepage, the question we would like you to consider and discuss is:

What behaviours and actions should we expect to see from coaches who truly embrace diversity and inclusion with their teams and clubs?

i attended the first webinar, and it was great listening to their stories and veiws, and what was great about it was generally they only had happy funny memories,im sure there were very dark times but they made the decision to not dwell on them, one thing i would say from listening to the webinar, is that make sure you have your players backs with regards to having the right values, and to make sure how as a club we stand on diversity and inclusion. lets all remember that these 2 values count for alot  of different things, hidden disabilities not just physical, mental awareness, gender the list goes on. Sport is for all and our values start at the top for others to follow
