Week by Week programme

Has anybody come across or created a week by week programme or syllabus for coaching a brand new team of 5 and 6 year old players new to the game? Starting with the basics, and then progression. What is most important to learn and develop first (basic skills) and when to introduce certain things (tactics, positioning etc.)

  • Hi Paul, Hope you're well? To be honest with you I think your syllabus and session structure will depend on what you want the players to get out of each session. I personally focus on staying on the ball and will try to focus my sessions around 1 ball for each player. This way they can have a lot more touches and begin to develop those skills.

It's important that at this age you make sessions as fun as possible with small tactical information hidden within each session. For example, playing fun games that will develop spatial awareness and players identifying where other players are on the pitch as well as being able to identify space.

You can then progress games to have a positive, game related outcome such as directional games or scoring a goal. Don't be afraid to try new ideas and think about reviewing sessions to ensure you are getting as much out of it as your players!

    Any questions please ask.
