How do I get more involved as an assistant coach?

As a 17 year old, I've recently started volunteering as an assistant coach for my neighbour's football team. The coach is quite strict with his players and takes it seriously and I don't really get any opportunities to get involved and help out with the session even though I think I could do a really good job. How can I get more involved without stepping on the coach's toes

  • Hi Isaac,

I think this is a very common experience for those first moving into more senior roles - and not just in football! Indeed when I first became a junior manager at my workplace, I had the feeling of having to 'stay in my lane'.

Have you spoken to the head coach about this? It might be something as very simple as he's not aware of your willingness to become a second pair of hands, even if it's just to start off with the mundane jobs such as equipment prep. Never feel like you are stepping on toes if you are just offering some assistance, I'm sure eventually he wouldn't be able to imagine running a session without your help!

    Best of luck!
