Attack vs Defence

Hello,

I am setting up an attach v defence practice for 15 players. I’m using the goalkeeping, back four and one defensive midfielder, against two attackers, two midfielders and two wingers. I’m looking at ways to run this drill.

Parents
  • SOUNDS GOOD, Just use half pitch, usual net and then on halfway two small goals. Put cones to make channels on ether side to play out to wingers for crossing to finish only inbox. Defending team can shoot/pass from distance in to mini nets or dribble it in.

  • Hi Andrew,

I was thinking of running it like this.

Core Exercise – Attack vs Defence with Neutrals (20–25 mins)

    Setup:

    • Half-pitch, 1 large goal.
    • Two neutral target players boxed on halfway line (5x5m each).
    • 5–6 balls near GK for fast restarts.
    • Press/step line ~10m outside penalty area.

    Teams:

    • Defending team (7): GK + 4 defenders + 2 CDMs
    • Attacking team (6): 1 holding mid + 3 attacking mids + 2 strikers
    • 2 Neutrals on halfway line

    Flow of Play:

    1. GK Distribution:
      • Short GK pass: defenders build up → look for neutral.
      • Long GK kick: triggers defenders to push up together.
    2. Defensive Play to Neutrals:
      • Neutral 1 receives → passes to Neutral 2 → passes to attacking team.
      • Defenders drop and compact after the neutrals connect.
    3. Attacking Trigger:
      • When attackers receive from the second neutral, combine quickly and look to score.
    4. Restart:
      • Any ball out of play → restart from GK.

    then go into an 8v8
