Goalkeepers - U7

Hi there!

I have recently taken on my sons U6 team (Soon to be U7). Currently its going well with a squad of 7 and looking to increase that to 8.

The problem I am having is goalkeeper. Currently my son is helping out and doing a half each week and then we are swapping the other halves between the rest. Whilst my son enjoys going in goal, he also likes playing outfield and I am finding him getting lost now when outfield. I have no problem with him doing a stint in goal but as it stands hes the only one that is consistently doing it and id like to get to a stage where hes able to have weeks where he doesnt have to go in goal.

How do people manage this? Some of the kids we have tried definitely are not keepers and my son can make a good save here and there. There are a couple that are good in goal but they are our best players outfield. For me I would swap it each week but then again I dont want one kids conceding loads and demoralising them. I feel itd be better to have 2 or 3 regulars taking it in turns each week?

Thanks

  • At u7, we just said everyone had to have a go at playing gk.

Id try doing a fun gk session at training, jumping on balls, throwing/catching and loads of praise to get some confidence, usually you ll have a couple that might say they don't mind giving it a go.

Also, frame it as a superpower. "You are the only outfield player that can use their hands." I always encouraged the goalkeeper to play as a defender so they weren't just stuck, standing between the posts, no one wants to do that, they want to be involved.

    Good luck
