Am I too old to start out as a football coach?

I would like to change career and retrain as a football coach. I am in my 50s and not as fit as I once was.

I have zero experience of football coaching but I am a qualified teacher and well used to working with kids in other settings.

Never really been that good at playing football myself but a huge fan of the game and I've seen firsthand how football can bring diverse communities together.

Any 'older' coaches out there that started in later life?

Thank you.

  • Definitely Sam! There has never been as much for coach support too. Courses no doubt have taken different shapes and sizes with coaches you may speak with along their different coaching journeys, but with support offered at grassroots clubs but also through your local County FA and The FA, there is always an avenue as a "new" coaching to the game.

Some brilliant comments below to certainly reiterate that you're never too old to get started in coaching and they'll be so many local clubs to you only too happy to have your time and support!

Is this something you're looking to possibly start in 2025?
