Am I too old to start out as a football coach?

I would like to change career and retrain as a football coach. I am in my 50s and not as fit as I once was.

I have zero experience of football coaching but I am a qualified teacher and well used to working with kids in other settings.

Never really been that good at playing football myself but a huge fan of the game and I've seen firsthand how football can bring diverse communities together.

Any 'older' coaches out there that started in later life?

Thank you.

  • Not at all. You have experience of working with children so thats a starting point. You would need to complete your DBS, safe guarding and play maker course as a starting point but reach out to a local club or county FA as they may help you fund (the club) your courses. Personally i would start with the youngest age group as that will ease you into coaching and then take them the whole way through their grassroots journey and be a mentor in/out of football.
