Progressing to 9v9

Hi,

I help run an u10 team in York. We currently have 22 players registered which gives us a good amount to run two 7-a-side teams, which we run as mixed ability. Next season, we will move to 9-a-side. I'm interested to see how others have approached this transition. I also have some specific questions that I'd like peoples' views on please:

- If we stick with two teams, when (if ever) should we move from mixed ability to A and B?

- 22 players doesn't seem enough for two 9-a-side teams - only max 2 subs per team, so would need to recruit more players. We've the option of just running one team, but then we'd be limited to max squad size of 18, making it so 4 of our current players wouldn't be able to sign-on. Positives of this approach might include not needing to recruit new players, having plenty of subs (I appreciate it's max 5 per game), and keeping most of the current squad together without needing to announce A and B squads (if we were to do that). Thoughts?

  • Hi.  100% recruit a few more players and create 2 teams.

I know some people frown upon an A & B team, but if done the right way and for the right reasons - especially at U11+ then i think it’s a great idea.

I’d still aim to develop them in same way and give a pathway from B to A.

ie rather than recruit for the A team in future seasons, look to always promote and recruit for B team instead.

    good luck
