Goalkeeper troubles

Our (new this season) girls U10's team has one goalkeeper. When she can't make the match, or we want a game in training, none of the other girls are willing to play in goal. Does anyone have any tips for encouraging the girls to try out the position for the good of the team?

  • Hi Carl, very similar position with U13 girls a while back, I had an older girl, excellent GK, come along and 'role model' the GK position, just her and the the girls, I stepped away. The girls thought this was super cool and fought over the gloves for the next game. We are also adding some GK basic work into sessions, led by me but delivered by the U13 GK (who now has IDOL like status) and again we have a queue to participate. The rookies then get a 1/4 in the next match. We ensure we have our best defenders to minimise shots and we concentrate on simple instructions for goal kicks, drop kicks and coming out for one on ones. We also inform the ref that the GK is a rookie and ask for help reminding the GK about back pass, where to take the kick from etc, never met a ref yet that was not willing to help. persevere and good luck and let us know how you get on. Build build and build their confidence.
