Mixed age training

Is +2 years mixed age contact training allowed? For example, can U13s make up the numbers for an U11 session? Player ability and physical size very similar. I know playing up is limited to one year for matches, but is more than 1 year acceptable for training?

  • There is no restriction as such for mixed age training.

I may be inclined to restrict it for the really young ones to two year age groups but I think at these age you could mix U11s/12s and 13s, say, or U12s/13s/14s.

You should always monitor for safety and behaviour anyway but I think this is a good way to have the younger ones learn from the older ones and the older ones can be shown leadership and caring skills by encouraging and supporting the young ones and keeping an eye out for them.

My local club is looking to have a 3G installed next season and I am planning to facilitate mixed age group sessions for the 'social' players that don't necessarily play organised football and for those that need extra practice to develop further.

No subs, no 'coaching' as such (design of game helps game understanding) no 'fitness drills', no line drills.

    Hope this helps.
