Second opinion wanted

I’m currently coaching a boys u10 team. I took over the role mid season , as the previous two coaches the team had treated the players badly and drained the boys ability to improve and also destroying there confidence . The team had no structure at all with training and also in match days when I took over as coach . I have introduced structured training sessions to which the players have shown a massive improvement in there abilities and development and I have gained back there confidence in there abilities as previously they were scolded for making mistakes so they were playing with fear in the minds . I have given the players a free role to express , experiment with techniques and skills and to play without fear of making mistakes and to enjoy there game as individuals and as a team. The problem is the players train really well and perform skills and techniques 110% in training , but come match days they freeze and fail to perform from what is taken from training ground to game day . I have some really good players , but feel that something is holding them back as they are not playing to there potential…. I know confidence is a big part of this problem , but I have tried different approaches to unlock this problem but to no success . I know this is a working progress and will take time to work through it … any ideas out there which I can turn to

  • I’ll be honest, sounds like you have done a great job so far. Can’t believe the previous regime!

It’ll take time sadly, but the way you are with them will be key. If you haven’t done it, I’d also maybe speak to the parents and explain what you are trying to do and make sure they are also on the same page. So making sure they are encouraging and focus on the positives, and not doing a back seat deep dive after the game which isn’t helpful.

I’d also setup some friendlies with teams you know you’ll have a decent game with, with coaches who are of a similar mindset and tell them what you are trying to do, so they can hopefully feel at ease.

  • Hi Michael,

I work with children; sometimes it's good to build their confidence away from football.   Paintballing or a group activity where they can laugh, have fun and see that it's ok to make mistakes.  The old regime is still stuck in their minds and worry is the hardest thing to take away from children's minds.  Instill fun in everything they do and applaud mistakes.  Bringing them closer as a team outside of football will help them continue to find enjoyment and work harder for each other.  Good luck.
