How to defend against strong attackers at u8s?

Hi, my u8s unsurprisingly struggle to defend against more talented attackers they come up against on matchdays.

What I'm struggling with is how to improve on that in training as we don't have enough players who as talented as the attacking ones we come up against!

Any ideas on this?

  • In what way struggle? That they get beaten, that they don’t slow down runners, blocking, physically?

At that age, we covered the basics. That the first rule they had was just to slow the attacker down to let your teammates get into the right place, so we did drills to help them get their body in the right shape and position. This also helped them to stop diving in to challenges.

Second thing we covered was about cover, how the midfielders can help defend so you end up in a 2v1. This also helped us press from the front (this takes time, I’ve been with this team from little to u15).

Then we covered how to work as a unit, and communication. So if one presses the attacker, where do the other players need to be to help them and be successful.

    Hopefully that helps.
