U9 and tactics

Hi All,

My son plays for his local team. He is in the U9's group (5-a-side) and since moving to U9 is being asked by the coach to hold position, not to attack the ball if a teammate is there first but instead just watch and see what happens. This is all good but I find it hinders his natural instincts and he spends most of the game second guessing himself. I want to tell him to just play naturally, just go for the ball, and just make decisions on the pitch.

What I am wondering is, whilst it is great to focus on tactics, if its to the detriment of your own game/fun is it worth it at that age.

Thanks

  • Hi Darvid, thanks for your question. I agree that enjoyment at that age is very important. The coach may have been wanting to help him with some scanning skills which can also be good and can be made fun. Did you ask the coach what they were trying to get out of doing this and it's benefits? May be worth a chat with them if not to talk about how you feel?
