Observation skills

Looking to enhance your observation skills? Then try Warren Hackett's challenge that he has set you on the latest episode of Coachcast:

"In your next session or in your next training game, can you reverse your lens? So what I mean by reversing your lens is we talk about on, around, away from the ball. Can you look away, around and then on the ball? Because what is going on away from the ball is going to have a massive effect on what's going on, on the ball. So that would be my challenge.

"It's really easy to watch TV and watch the ball as it moves, but look away from it and look at other players and where they position themselves that may have an effect on the ball.

"I think the final bit I'll add to that is, watch the game as a coach and not as a supporter. All supporters watch the ball. That's where their focus is, but try and watch it as a coach. Broaden your lens, pull away from the ball and see the bigger picture."

  • I think the big takeaway for me is not watching the ball. It's so easy to do this. But focusing on other players, the environment, opposition is hugely helpful. Even observing others' behaviour can tell you a lot. Having a clear idea of what you want to observe and why is fundamental to getting the most out of training and matchday.
