U7 passing

I am coaching u7 and was thinking of having a no tackling rule so some of the less confident players would get a chance to dribble and try a pass unopposed , then progress to only the defender can tackle semi opposed , next progression everyone can tackle opposed, they would be able to intercept a pass or get the ball from a heavy touch.
Would this help or hinder?

  • Hi George I think this sounds like a good plan and worth giving a go! Providing different ways of tackling would always help players consider when and how to tackle too. So all in all a positive suggestion, I think.

  • Hi George,

I know this is a bit away from your question but for me....It's worth considering what you mean by 'tackling' as this can be quite a scary thought for younger children. They are often worried they will get kicked and in turn lose the ball, therefore are less likely to try and dribble or in this case rush the pass without thinking of where it can go.

Some suggestions I would think of would be:

1/ Build the game up - rather than using 'full on tackling' where players are expected to win the ball and then do something perhaps start with 'toe taps', if a defender only has to touch the ball with their feet and then the ball is turned over, players will often become more aware of how to 'protect and shield' the ball. Once they are more confident to take on players and have the coaching to look after the ball the dribbling will usually become more confident.

2/ Consider areas of the pitch where players can dribble with out being tackled, almost as you have suggested in your initial post, but all in one game. Having safe zones in specific areas will often encourage behaviours to be more confident. Players will work out that they have more time in certain areas and therefore be more confident. As they become more comfortable on the you can progress to smaller 'safe zones'. Having certain areas in which they can practice passing will also work the same way.

3/ England football YouTube has some really good videos on how to improve these things. Last month had some brilliant ones on Pressing and this month has passing.

All in all sounds like you are doing well thinking about how to layer up and progress so well done and keep up the good work!

  • Hi George,

Try changing the word you use to INTERCEPTING to start with,

    "can you intercept the ball"

"can you intercept the line of direction"

    "can you intercept the pass"

most can be done without direct contact but still winning possesion.

    confidence with contact will come
