Kevin Daniels  Thanks for your question as I'm sure that it is one that lots of Grassroots coaches think about.

Best practice is to follow FA Respect guidance which suggest the following:

• Coaches from both teams to be on one side of the pitch, either side of the half-way line.
• Technical areas to be marked out (using cones is sufficient) if perimeter space around the outside of pitch allows. This encourages coaches to keep a short distance away from the side-line and helps with observation of the action. 
• Parents/spectators to be on the other side of the pitch behind a Respect barrier; this should be set at least 2metres from side-line, again if space allows.

All of the above are designed to allow our young players to play without constant instruction/shouting information from coaches and parents/spectators. Research shows that children enjoy their football experience more when parents/spectators applaud more and shout less.
