U7s is telling the players to pass pass pass not the right thing to do?

I tell my players to pass pass pass and that passing is as good as scoring. I want to see this in games, so I do a lot of passing drills and Rondo drills in training, I try not to neglect skills (mastering the ball etc) and ball control, but should I just be concentrating on the individual getting better with running with the ball and skills to get themselves past players and out of trouble i.e. congested area of the pitch?

  • Hi Andrew, I think all of these skills are important and I would work on all of them. I think the most important thing is equipping players with all of the relevant skills and giving them the opportunity to make their own choices in games. Allowing them to pick when to pass, dribble etc will be most beneficial to their development. Of course, if there are times when you think they didn't get it quite right then talk it through with them/ask them why they did what they did and if there could have been any other things they could have done. It also depends on the individuals. Some may be better at passing, some better at dribbling - so having individual / mini group approaches may help too. Hope that helps.
