Basic Training Drills For U-12 Girls Football Team

Hi - I am new to coaching and have recently taken over the running of an U12 girls team. I have helped out before but form next season onwards am manager. The main thing I am looking for is some good links/tips for the following:

  • Training sessions - 1 hour sessions - suggested drills and game sot keep them interested and improving.
  • Pre-match warm-ups - same as above.

I am "getting by" at present but if anyone has any suggestions of session plans they can share it would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

Adam.

  • Hi Adam, that's great to hear! How are you finding it?

Are there any specific areas you want to focus on (e.g. dribbling, passing etc)? There are loads of great sessions, articles, etc. on the Bootroom - https://thebootroom.thefa.com/resources/sessions

If you have any specific questions about them and/or about coaching in general please post away on here. Our coach developers are keen to help out.

    Thanks,

    Tim

  • Hi Adam,

I coach mixed groups at a younger age but I personally believe many drills uploaded to places like YouTube can be adapted to fit just about every scenario. My starting point in deciding what to use is 'ability' - what they can physically do; then it's 'mentality', i.e. will they want to do it? Have they got the attention span, etc? This is important if you end up with lines or queues.

As for sessions, as a rough guide, each is broken down into chunks starting with simple warm up activities (with and without the ball); simple solo ball mastery work; then some drills usually in small group, e.g. cone obstacle course and finishing, or 1 v 1, etc. The last 20 mins would be small sided matches.

Some specific suggestions for a warm up activity with the ball, in a marked area, get the girls to pair up numbered 1 and 2. On signal, 1s dribble around the area, avoiding traffic; 2s are then asked to dribble with their partners, keeping as close as possible. 1s are encouraged to turn, use speed, etc, to keep the 2s guessing. After time, rotate so 2s lead. Next level, have one ball between each pair. On signal, 1s dribble off but this time 2s will be tasked to try and win the ball back. Again rotate after time.

    Good luck.
