Working with young children can be challenging with behavior, what is the best approach to manage a disruptive child?

  • Hi Luke here is a response from one of our coaching developers, Stacey Miles. Her laptop is down at the moment but she has asked me to write this response. Hope it helps.

One of the best aspects of coaching a group, is that it is full of individual people. My question to you would be what specific behaviors would you like to help them develop? I would suggest spending time highlighting good behaviour consistently within the group of individuals, in my experience finding time praising good behaviour specifically, following this often I have found that the rest of the group then wanted to behave in the same way. Furthermore, you could reward good behaviour with points for individuals and teams etc, linking to motivation. In addition with any young group I am working with we had a ’Focus 3’ Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Ready To Learn. Anything that players do should be aligned to those focus 3 at all times, be consistent in supporting players with the focus 3 and certainly praising the right behaviours and actions aligned to them. To be able to support the development of people, as a coach finding the best way to speak with that individual person, in the right way at the right time, linking to their motivations. This takes time, be consistent and don’t forget to highlight the many good behaviours, catching them in!
