morning Chris , i dont think there are any courses on here for autism, but there are some blogs on specific disabilities.
youll do just as well to read up on autism about the certain barriers the child could face in a football setting.
I.E loud noises
big crowds
being quiet or having lots of energy
not being able to communicate well
lack of eye contact
social awkward
sensory barriers
but people with autism will have passions, big passions so try to plan sessions to incorporate them
good luck
there is also the introduction to disabilitiy course which will give you an overview of coaching all disabilities
Hi mate I can relate to that. i have an autistic child in my team. Where as he doesn’t suffer with any physical restrictions mentally he can have problems. When he first joined it was hard to get him to concentrate and distanced himself from the team so was hard to get him to join in. During training sessions I set up exercises for the team and other exercises for this lad and maybe 2/3 of the team so he could get used to them slowly. A year down the line and. Now he’s the first one at training and raring to go with the whole team. Every now and again in training he goes off track a bit but give him something to do in a match and he’s the most focused lad out there. He’s so passionate and he’s a really big part of the team.
Jamie what a great success story! Fantastic to hear how your approach helped this player build confidence, feel part of the team and excel. Well done!
Hi Christopher. At the moment The FA don't have a course specifically for autism. However, there is an online module that the National Autistic Society offer called 'Autism, sport and physical activity' that you may find useful.
