Development phase Vs Competitive Phase

I have a son who plays at U13's, he plays at a good level at a semi-pro club.

I also have a daughter who plays at U10's and it is this team that I coach and help to run.

My question is at what point does it get more serious in terms of looking at results and performances etc.

Obviously at my daughters level we make it fun and concentrate on development over results, my sons team are driven by development and obviously want to win as its in a competitive league, they do sometimes get roasted if they mess about or if they do not play well.  There are lots of encouraging times as well so it's not all negative.

I am just curious at what time does it 'get serious' to a certain extent.

  • Mick ,  I Have ask that question to myself in the past , many of those years have past , I'm still engaged with coaching having a great time nurturing young talented individuals to progress , the only seriousness I have is trying to be on time creating some stability and structure ,and a environment where they can strive and have fun , at any age , ability , even the top clubs players need to have fun .

as a coach i will always look at the words i use

WINNING- beating the opposition by the end of the game

    RESULTS- turning up on time

fielding a full squad because EVERYONE wants to play

                      EVEYONE enjoying the game

                      EVERYONE improving themselves

                      Moving forward with self discovery

                      Smiling every session

99% of children want to win, they want to be part of a team or they wouldnt come.

even youngsters know if they WIN evey game they will WIN whatever competition they are in.

its the process of RESULTS personally and as a team that will lead them to possibly WINNING.

as they become older that passion may grow and as a coach we grow with them.

But the words we use in the wrong context can have the opposite effect
