Passing tasks

Each month we will be posting a themed ready, steady coaching challenge for all community members to get involved with.

We provide the space, equipment and players but your challenge is to set the task.

The focus for March is to improve passing.

You have…

  • Space: half a full-size grass pitch on a local park.
  • Equipment: 12 footballs, plenty of cones but no goals available.
  • Players: an U14 team with 16 players available (14 outfield and two goalkeepers).

So, what task will you set your players to develop passing?

  • I would try a 'passing forward' challenge. Basically create two small playing areas and use cones to mark a box area instead of a goal at each end. The idea is to have small sided games but instead of goals, each team is trying to complete a pass to their teammate in the box. Only that player is allowed in the box. Each successful pass equals 1 point. When a point is scored, the ball goes to the opposite box player to restart the game. Rotate roles to allow everyone a go in the box (or ask the goalies if they want to remain in a box to help them work on distribution). As we have 16 players, I would have two 4 v 4 games.

  • Thanks for your answer, Steven! That sounds like a really useful and positive task.
