I have a player who goes missing on the pitch

I have a player in my team who is in the top 3 technically, good ball control & skill, has a good pass and shot in him. Come match day he seems to get lost on the pitch, drifts out of position and stops running a lot.
I have spoken to him about playing in his allocated position and tried him in different positions but it always ends up the same - any ideas please?

He also seems quite bright & I do believe he understands what we want from him - not sure how to motivate him / get the best from him.

    what age are they playing?

in training is he playing lots of SSG's?

Is he uncomfortable in large areas if not used to them?

Is there an issue of not being used to periods in the game of not having the ball.

He sounds like hes very good in possesion, but is he less knowledgeable out of possesion?

try interventions during pratice, not too much but with questions like

    "can you delay them"

"how quick can you win the ball back"

"where can you make it difficult for the opposition"

    just a thought

    all the best lee
