February's ready, steady coach challenge…

Each month we will be posting a themed ready, steady coaching challenge for all community members to get involved with.

We provide the space, equipment and players but your challenge is to set the task.

The focus is for this month to improve pressing.

You have…

  • Space: a third of a full-size astroturf pitch.
  • Equipment: ten footballs, plenty of cones and two goals.
  • Players: an U9’s team with ten players available (nine outfield and one goalkeeper)

So, what task will you set your players to develop pressing?

Comment below with your ideas, check out other members' ideas and vote for your favourite.

i wpould start wiith an eplanation with what were doing and trying to achieve, and weigh up the pros and cons

warm up would be 1v1 un-opposed 5m x2m lanes marked with red cones . defender starts on base line can only press/move forward when balls in play,

once up to the player they must jockey to the base line. coaching on speed of press and body shape

    5 minutes in total

progression move to 3v2 join lanes up 5m x 4, goal each end. 3 attackers 2 defenders importance of underloaded defence is to realise the consequences of rushing in disjointed and trying to make a tackle, if not sucessful then there is a 3v1 in favour of attackers

start play by coach feeding ball into attackers, defenders still starting on baseline, things to watch for from a defensive outlook is recognising a poor pass from coach, poor control and where player with ball is facing. these can be triggers of when to press.

this pratice gives the coach a chance to ask players why they made a decision to press or guide with why it worked or not.

goals for attackers in 3v2 are can you suck defence in, can you tire them out can you play through to score or can you win a 1v1 battle

if attackers reach base line then its 1 points

goals for defence are to recognise these triggers to press, to communicate with each other of when to press

to think about the technique of rushing and body shape and if they win the ball are they brave enough to strive forward with it or reset

if defender reach base line its 2 points and they choose an attacker to become 3v2 then they attack.

choosing the size of the area to pratice these, the coach is able to highlight what areas in a game this skill can be used.

playing a 5v5 at the end free play for 5-10 mins then  you could ask each team to choose an area of the pitch they want  to press in, if a goal is scored directly from a press it counts as 2

hopefully after freeplay they might be able to recognise certain areas/players that are a weak point of the oppositon

its important throughout the session to keep asking why, how, where they are decision making individually and as a group

its a high, fast paced activity throughout which will also bring tiredness into the equation
