Any recommendations on resources for drills for young players (5-6 year olds)?

There's some good example of drills in the resources section ... but can anyone recommend a source of more drills - specifically those suitable for younger players.

I currently coach at a weekly football fun session where we have mixed abilities divided up into four groups - so looking for a range of drills, from the more basic to more challenging

Thanks!

  • Hi Mark,

Thank you for posting in the forum. Hopefully people will share their successes and games for you to try. In terms of this age group and the environment in which your training the first factor is in the name, FUN. It is so important to make these sessions fun before anything else and you will know your players best so if they enjoy specific games don't be afraid to play them again. That being said, think about how you can develop and progress them, can you challenge the group or individuals to try something new or focus on a specific skill?

There are many instant wins for this age and that include invasion games. I use this game at many sessions and find it to be great for young players and mixed ability groups. Each player has a ball and you have one defender, if the defenders wins the ball can they dribble it to a zone. If they do, that attacker then becomes an alien alongside them. Now within this game you will have so much going on that relates to games, 1v1 battles, finding space, lots of different touches and so on. Games like this are also really easy to tweak to support your players.

Another great resource is the FA Learning page, there are lots of games, session plans and learning opportunities on there. I have added the link below so feel free to take and look.
