Getting started in coaching...

Hi everyone, I am 37 years old and recently completed the BT Playmaker and Talent Identification Courses, I am now just waiting for the next stages to become available and committed to learning and developing my knowledge further. My question is, does anyone have any advice for a newcomer into coaching with no experience as to how I can gain experience coaching i.e. any websites or contacts who can point me in the right direction. Also while waiting for the coaching/talent identification courses to restart is there any material out there podcasts, books etc that will help develop my understanding of coaching in football? Thanks everyone.

  • Joseph,

Nothing actually beats watching a coaching session, no matter how good or bad it is. If you are super keen try contacting some local clubs or even the coaches in your club and ask if you can pop along and watch some of their sessions.

Check your local County FA for CPD courses as these will be run by advanced coaches and are a great source of inspiration as you begin your journey.

The Coaching Manual has some great resources too.

Be open to everything as you never know where you will get your next piece of the coaching puzzle from.

Don't just focus on football coaches either, find out about other great coaches like Patrick Mouratoglou (tennis) and Phil Jackson (Basketball). Some of their ideas around player motivation are incredible.
