the golden 'Foundation Phase' 5-7 or 5-11?

I've enjoyed reading through Pete Sturgess' Laying the Foundations series & especially the term the 'golden' Foundation Phase.

I often feel the Boot Room resources are too broad an age range for the 'golden' FP - I might be wrong and I'm quite happy to be proven so but I don't seem to see any resources for those of the 5-7 age group, it seems there is more focus/emphasis on working/demonstrating with players who are 7-11.

I wondered whether the Wildcats sessions could be added to resources and more content available to support players 5-7 years of age?

Just wondered what people think about this?

Cheers, Mark

  • To me the golden foundation phase is 6-13 because of the psychological development throughout this period that will define their long term perspective, Perception and their life experiences. 5-7 should be be pure fun that involves footballs and lots of them and ABC's. I think anyone trying to remotely over coach and force outcomes is detrimental to the child's long term development within the game due to it being the first experience and influence.

I have 3 boys of my own one at u12,u13 and under u15 and I still talk to them about football like I did throughout 6-13 as I never want them to feel like football is a series of learnt processes where we do 'this here and that there' but an environment they can go out and express themselves creatively in because the game is fun and an enjoyable experience of individual moments that is played within a team and it's theirs.

The biggest reason I see for ownership throughout any bodies football journey, is to be able to think for yourself and be be able to adapt to any given moment and hold no fear which our environments support.

With my eldest the psychological change throughout adolescents is huge but extremely different from anything between 6-13, A big reason to hold onto the fun as its a super competitive experience for 14-18 year olds as they develop into adulthood.

If this is anything like hive nobody should need for anything and everything was available, I never knew where to find anything though but it's all there Slight smileSlight smile

Where do I find laying the foundations?

Stay safe and have a great season
