New coach starting out - tips, do's & don'ts

Hi all, I've recently taken over coaching an U9 team. I have passed the BT playmaker and have scheduled the introduction to coaching course.

I've taken 3 sessions and overseen 2 friendlies, both losses. My question is what are some do's and don'ts for coaching at this level? I don't want to be overbearing but I do want to be able to get the kids to know how to win football matches.

Any advice would be greatly received.

Thanks.

  • Hi Matt,

First of all, credit to you for volunteering to coach these youngsters, it`s hard work but very rewarding! If I can offer you any advice it`s, don`t worry too much about results just yet. Just make sure the kids are safe, learning and having fun. Have an idea of what you want to do in training and stick to it, having fun along the way. Be confident in your own ability and this will rub off on the kids, Enjoy what your doing. Don`t put too much pressure on yourself. Try teaching, pass and go, pass and shoot, all fun games! Good luck and Enjoy.
