Hi, I have recently started helping at an u16 team and I need to come up with some sessions. I have no ideas for amount of players coming. Are there some session ideas that scale well depending on how many turn up?

As the title says. I'm helping out at an u16 team and basically it sounds like the amount of players who are turning up can be really hit and miss. Alot of what I look at requires a certain number and aren't always easy to adjust if alot more or less turn up. I have a few basic ideas such as a keep possession type session or a attack vs defence one where I could use 2 goals if needed but wondered if anyone had something they had used before.

  • Hi Richard, Interesting question, thanks.

Check out this article on the bootroom - https://thebootroom.thefa.com/resources/coaching/adapting-to-unexpected-player-numbers-at-training

Also, most of the sessions on the bootroom and mentioned in the community blogs (https://community.thefa.com/coaching/b) can be adapted. It would just be a case of playing a game and adding a player in each time they turn up. It just might mean one side has an overload over the other if it's uneven numbers; but that can be a coaching point, as in a real game they will face scenarios where they're outnumbered.

Setting up a few areas for small-sided games to play on arrival could be a good thing to start with, players can just jump on a pitch when they turn up to play 1v1s 2v2s etc, then you can progress from there into a practice on your topic, either sticking with small-sided games, or getting everyone together. It's very much just trial it out, swap players round and if it's a huge group, if space is available, split them up into smaller groups and have smaller activities based on the topic they're working on

Specific sessions can be found here - https://thebootroom.thefa.com/resources/sessions

    Hope this helps.
    Thanks,
    Tim
