At what age should players have consistent positions?

I coach U9s and have already noticed that the kids gravitate towards certain positions and have their own playing styles.  I currently rotate them around all positions so they get a chance to learn regularly experience each one.  At what age should I start to give them regular positions?

I can see the kids who like to play defence because the enjoy it, and I can see which ones play in defence because they aren't confident attacking.  I'm working with the later to build their all-round game but the ones who genuinely enjoy playing in defence - should I accept that and have them play there regularly?

  • Difficult especially as you head into competitive football at u12's. Not just players but also parents.

Rotation I think is good for players to learn more aspects of the game. Obviously some kids have attributes suited for certain positions but can still learn things beneficial playing in opposites i.e striker / defender.

Important thing I've found is allowing players time to learn whatever position they play as maybe been too guilty in past of being too choppy week to week.

Catch22 if players like playing defence ( rarity I've found ) is by moving them they don't really enjoy or get involved ..this then has knock on effect to other players ….. I don't think anyone has the answers ..stick o what you feel is right.... if kids ejoy it stick with it !

  • Hi Lee

You raise a valid point in regards to rotations , allowing time for them to exspieriment in different positions.

Having a good balance rotation is key Key
